Privacy and cookies

John’s EVs is a small, independent review site. It uses as few cookies as it can, and no advertising cookies unless you say yes.

Cookies we always use

Sign-in session. If you sign in, a session cookie keeps you signed in. It is only set when you sign in and is removed when you sign out.

Your ads cookie choice. The je_consent cookie remembers whether you accepted or rejected ads cookies, for six months, so we don’t ask on every page. It holds nothing else.

Reader accounts

You can sign in with just your email address: we email you a one-time link, and there is no password. If you do, we store:

  • your email address and the date your account was created
  • a record of each device you’re signed in on, until you sign out or the session expires
  • sign-in links we’ve emailed you, until they’re used or expire
  • if you subscribe, your newsletter subscription and which newsletters were sent to you

On your account page you can download your account and newsletter details as a file, change your newsletter preference, and delete your account.

Deleting your account is immediate and permanent. Your account, your sessions, any unused sign-in links, and your newsletter subscription are removed from our database at once, and can’t be recovered.

Ads, only if you accept

Ads help pay for the site. They come from Google AdSense, which uses cookies to show and measure ads. Until you accept, no ad code is loaded and no request goes to Google’s ad servers: the ad spaces show our own promos instead.

If you accept, Google may set its own cookies. Google explains how it uses data in How Google uses information from sites that use its services.

Without JavaScript, there is no cookie prompt and no ads load.

Change your choice

You can change your mind at any time. Your new choice applies straight away.

The newsletter

What we store. If you sign up, we keep your email address, whether your subscription is waiting for confirmation, confirmed, or unsubscribed, where on the site you signed up, and the dates you signed up, confirmed, and unsubscribed. The links in our emails carry codes that we store only in scrambled (hashed) form.

Why. To send you the newsletter you asked for, and to show that you confirmed you wanted it. Nobody gets it until they confirm their address, by the link in the confirmation email or by signing in. Emails are sent through our email provider, Resend. We don’t share or sell your address.

Unsubscribing. Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link: one click on the page it opens and you’re off the list. Many email apps also show their own unsubscribe button, which works the same way. Once you unsubscribe we send you nothing more, and we keep the record only so we know not to.

Deleting your data. Sign in with the same email address and delete your account from your account page. That removes your subscriber record along with your account.
